When you think of Milwaukee, churches usually aren’t the first things to come to mind, however the city is home to an amazing number of architectural gems. With the vast number of European immigrants settling in Milwaukee, especially from 1850s- early1900s, you’ll find a variety of churches of different denominations and style.

The tour begins on Milwaukee’s eastside with a drive through the Yankee Hill neighborhood with it’s collection of Episcopal, Methodist, Lutheran and Catholic churches built in the late 1800’s. You’ll learn about the city’s early days as you see the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist and Old St Mary’s designed in the German Zopstil style by the same architect and built from Milwaukee’s famous Cream City Brick in 1848.

We’ll travel to Marquette University, with its beautiful Church of the Gesu and the St Joan of Arc Chapel, built in the 15th Century near Lyons, France and moved to Milwaukee in 1964. Legend has it that Joan of Arc kissed a stone in this chapel before going to battle and it remains colder than any of the surrounding stones.

No Milwaukee church tour is complete without a visit to the magnificent Basilica of St Josaphat. Built by Polish immigrants at the turn of the 20th century, the architecture and interior design rivals many of the famous churches in Europe.

As we travel throughout the city on our church tour, we’ll also make sure to see the stunning Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, providing a more modern twist to church architecture.

Based on your group’s timing and interests, we can customize your Milwaukee Church Tour to include a number of other architecturally and culturally significant places of worship in the city.
