The museum has four to five exhibitions a year, classes, and special events throughout the year. Guided tours and special workshops are available to groups. Quilt education is available throughout the year in the form of lectures and quilting classes covering a variety of interesting and unusual quilt techniques. In addition, every year, the Museum sponsors the Lowell Quilt Festival, which features classes by renowned teachers, a judged and juried quilt show, and over 500 quilts on exhibit throughout the city of Lowell.
More than 250 quilts in the Museum's permanent collection chronicle the development of quiltmaking in America, beginning with early New England wholecloth and including examples of intricate appliques, highly embellished Victorian crazy quilts, and contemporary quilts made by today's world-renowned artists. Our commitment to quilts as a means of artistic expression compels us to seek out and preserve the finest examples from both yesterday and today.
Each year, visitors to the New England Quilt Museum experience exhibitions that explore the breadth of quiltmaking-from historic and thematic shows to retrospectives of innovative quiltmakers. In addition to these special exhibitions, a selection of quilts from the permanent collection is always on view. The Museum also boasts a shop stocked with hard-to-find textiles and quilting books, as well as fine crafts. The Museum Library, the only one of its kind in New England, holds thousands of reference books, magazines, and instructional videos, as well as specialized quilt software. Quilting classes, lectures, and community programs inspire adults and children alike. Museum personnel share the joy of quilting as a creative expression with school groups, seniors' groups, quilt guilds, and travelers of all ages.Hours of work
