California's capital city is a destination rich in Gold Rush history, loaded with cosmopolitan amenities and home to celebrity – current and past – governors. When operators select Sacramento as the hub for their Northern California itinerary, they’ve truly discovered gold: single-hotel stay, value accommodations and a central location – one to two hours away – to some of the area’s most famous and exciting attractions and destinations.
In Old Sacramento, a 28-acre state historic park along the riverfront, groups will enjoy a selection of restaurants, shops and attractions. One of the many attractions in Old Sacramento includes the California State Railroad Museum, one of the world’s premier attractions for railroad enthusiasts. Its exhibit, “We’ve Been Working on the Railroad!” illustrates the human side of railroading with 18 life-like figures representing real people at work on the railroad.
Other attractions not to be missed include the restored Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park, the designated official venue for the Governor to greet visiting dignitaries. The elegant, four-story mansion was built between 1856 and 1858. Today, the 19,000-square-foot architectural gem has been restored to its original grandeur filled with many original furnishings and rich details, such as crystal chandeliers and gleaming wooden paneling to delicately painted brackets, gilded mirrors and elaborate draperies. The mansion welcomes the public to learn about the fascinating history of the former inhabitants of the Leland Stanford Mansion.
If ‘governor-spotting’ is on your itinerary, be sure to take a tour of not only the Leland Stanford Mansion, but the State Capitol and Museum as well, followed by lunch at one of “The Governator’s” favorite local restaurants (call the Sacramento CVB for the scoop).
Taking a day trip from Sacramento is a breeze. To the west sits the natural beauty of San Francisco and the winegrowing regions of Napa Valley and Sonoma; to the east is the historic Gold Country and to the north lies spectacular Lake Tahoe.
