Number of Days: 4

DAY 1

Begin at the Rural Heritage Museum and see an authentic hearth
cooking demonstration or learn how to make an old fashioned doll.
On to Sharpsburg, home of Antietam National Battlefield, site of
“The Bloodiest One Day Battle in American History,” in which 23,000
soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage
combat on September 17, 1862. The battle led to Abraham Lincoln’s
issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. An authorized
battlefield guide can be provided by Antietam Guide Service.
Lunch at Antietam Ironworks, with stunning views of Antietam Creek.
Afterwards, experience the “Power of Passionate Shopping” at Prime
Outlets. For evening entertainment the Washington County Play
House offers great food and outstanding theatrical performances.

DAY 2
First stop is on the summit of South Mountain, at the Washington
Monument, the first dedicated to the memory of George Washington.
A short drive away is the famous War Correspondents Memorial
Arch, a stone monument built as a tribute to army journalists and
photographers. Park historians can provide a cannon-firing demonstration.
Lunch at Beaver Creek Country Club. Afterwards, explore
historic downtown Boonsboro, named for cousins of the famous
Daniel Boone. A must-do is a visit to Turn the Page Bookstore,
owned by New York Times bestselling author, Nora Roberts. Nearby
is the Boonsborough Museum of History, which houses an extensive
Civil War collection. An enchanted evening awaits with dinner
at the historic Old South Mountain Inn.

DAY 3
Begin the morning with a home tour of the Miller House & Gardens,
headquarters of the Washington County Historical Society. A short stroll
away is the Discovery Station and Hagerstown Aviation Museum
offering hands-on learning and a collection depicting our rich aviation
heritage. Experience our connection with our Sister City, Wesel,
Germany, with lunch at the Schmankerl Stube Bavarian Restaurant.
Next stop is City Park, and the Jonathan Hager House, home of
Hagerstown’s founder, Jonathan Hager. The home is maintained with
authentic pieces of the 1740’s frontier era. Also in City Park is the
Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. The museum has a
collection of American paintings, Old Masters and European works –
there’s even a Picasso! For evening entertainment visit our Arts &
Entertainment District. Dine at Duffy’s on Potomac, then step across
the street to the Maryland Theatre, our Grand Lady of the Performing
Arts, and home of the Maryland Symphony Orchestra. Take in a show,
or take a behind-the-scenes tour.

DAY 4
Explore Fort Frederick, a stone fort that was the site of Maryland's
frontier defense during the French and Indian War. Visit Hancock,
where historic sites are now recreational opportunities. Hiking and
biking are favorite activities along the Western Maryland Rail Trail
and the C&O Canal. Visit the Hancock Antique Mall, and be sure
to stop at Hepburn’s Orchards for a fresh baked pie. Lunch at
Weaver’s Restaurant and Bakery, a favorite of locals and tourists
for over 50 years.
