DAY 1: Cedar City & Utah Shakespearean Festival
Arrive in Cedar City, Utah – Festival City USA. Stroll the historic downtown
of quaint shops, fun eateries and stunning Rock Church. Learn
about pioneer life at the Iron Mission State Park Museum. Dinner is
at the Garden House Restaurant, located in a pioneer home. Stroll
over to the Utah Shakespearean Festival for Shakespeare, performed
under the stars in the grand Adams Theater, a replica of
Shakespeare’s Globe. 2008 plays include: Two Gentlemen of Verona,
Othello and Cyrano de Bergerac, (June 19-August 30).
DAY 2: Cedar Breaks National Monument & Brian Head Loop
Depart for Cedar Breaks National Scenic Monument. Cedar Breaks is
a giant natural amphitheater over 2,500 feet deep and more than three
miles across. A spruce and aspen forest surrounds the monument
with lush green meadows featuring 150 species of wildflowers. Check
out Cedar Breaks Wildflower Festival throughout July. Participate in a
ranger-led walk or hike the short Alpine Pond Trail. Venture to Brian
Head Ski Resort for a late lunch, then take a scenic chairlift (Friday-
Sunday only) to the top of Brian Head Peak or go on an adventurous
ATV tour.
Depart Brian Head to Parowan Gap Petroglyphs to see ancient Native American rock art. Return to Cedar City for dinner at the Shakespearean themed restaurant Bard’s. Then wander over to the Randall Jones Theater for a contemporary play presented indoors.
2008 plays presented in the indoor theater include: Fiddler on the Roof, Taming of the Shrew and School For Wives (June 19-Aug 30) and Moonlight & Magnolias, Julius Caesar, and Gaslight (Sept 19-October 25.)
DAY 3: Red Canyon and Bryce Canyon National Park
Depart Cedar City to Red Canyon for a breathtaking view of red limestone
formations. Arrive in Bryce Canyon National Park and stop at the visitor center for a ranger led activity. Have lunch at the Bryce Canyon Lodge or Ruby’s Inn Resort.
Drive the Bryce Canyon scenic drive, stopping at several viewpoints including Thor’s Hammer, Rainbow Point and Inspiration Point. Take a horseback ride into the canyon for up close and personal view of the park or hike the Navajo/Queens Garden Loop. Late afternoon, enjoy the Bryce Canyon Rodeo at Ruby’s Inn Resort or enjoy a chuckwagon dinner at the Showdown Ranch. Return to Cedar City early evening.
DAY 4: Zion National Park and Kolob Canyons
Grab a sack lunch and depart for Zion National Park Visitor Center. Board the shuttle for Zion Scenic Drive to view massive, sculpted cliffs that tower 3,000 feet from the canyon’s floor. See breathtaking scenery like the Court of Patriarchs, Angel’s Landing, The Great White Throne and the Watchman. Hike the easy Riverside Walk and the Emerald Pools trail.
Depart Zion late afternoon, taking the short six mile side trip to Kolob Canyons-Zion’s North Canyon. Here the rugged, red Navajo sandstone cliffs tower over the valley. Stop at several viewpoints to see the “finger canyons” of the park. Hike the short Timbercreek Trail for panoramic views of the Kolob terrace and West Zion.
Return to Cedar City for a leisurely dinner at Milt’s Stage Stop, a nationally recognized steakhouse situated in beautiful Cedar Canyon.
