Day 1 - Sea Island Ecology Tours
Marsh Meander - Experience the natural wonders of the beach and salt marshes of Hilton Head Island and Southern Beaufort County. While walking the beach, listen and learn about some of the wildlife that inhabit our coastlines and rivers. This is also an excellent time for the sea shell collectors. Nature Boat Cruise – Cruise the waterways and learn about the flora and fauna of this enchanting barrier region and its abundance of wildlife. Coastal Discovery Museum - Come check out this museum which sits on a 200 year old plantation known as Honey Horn. While visiting you’ll learn things like where the Live Oak gets it’s name, why Oysters are such an important part of the local ecology and also see some of the crops that people on the barrier islands have been living off of for centries. Crazy Crab Seafood – Finish the day off at one of the island’s favorite seafood house. With a menu containing items from steak to seafood, everyone is sure to enjoy this local hangout.
Day 2 – Explore Gullah Culture
Gullah Heritage Trail Tour - No state is richer in Gullah history than South Carolina and the Beaufort County area. This is the place where great numbers of Africans were brought from the holds of ships to begin what they thought would be a new life. Daufuskie Island Tour - Only accessible by boat, this unique island is steeped in history. To the Gullah People, this was a new and unfamiliar place, and they created a rich culture that is still alive today Beaufort Penn Center on St. Helena Island – Come and see the first school ever built for frees slaves in 1862. Visit the Chapel of Ease where you can purchase sweet grass baskets, which have been a Gullah tradition for centuries. Explore its roots on your next trip! Dye’s Gullah Fixins – Dine with a direct descendant of the Gullah people. For generations the Gullah have passed on recipes such as deviled crab and seafood gumbo. Come and experience the tastes of a culture that is like no other!
Day 3 - Arts, Antiques and Entertainment
Hilton Head Island Art Galleries – It’s a day to discover South Carolina as the arts await your arrival. Start your tour with a welcome reception at a local art gallery and then you’re off to visit several top and antique galleries on the island. Calhoun Street’s Gallery Row - On this stop you will enjoy the small town splendor of Old Town Bluffton and the eclectic antique shops and art galleries it has to offer. Arts Center of Coastal Carolina – Stop by and catch a musical theatre production or one of the performing series that visit one of the Nationally Acclaimed Art Centers of the South. The beautiful surroundings combined with the many forms of dance, theatre and music are a treasure for lovers of the arts. Jazz Corner – Finish the evening with some swing and soul at one of jazziest night spots on the island. The mix of jazz, blues, and excellent food will have you wanting to come back in no time.
